These sequential auctions might be organised as sequential first-price, second-price, or English auctions. We will derive equilibrium bidding strategies for these auctions. Theoretical models suggest that prices in sequential auctions with private values or with randomly assigned heterogeneous objects should have no trend. However, empirical research contradicts this result and prices exhibit a declining or increasing trend, which is called declining and increasing price anomaly. We will present a review of these empirical results, as well as different theoretical explanations for these anomalies.

In many natural settings agents participate in multiple different auctions that are not simultaneous. In such auctions, future opportunities affect strategic considerations of the players. The goal of this paper is to develop a quantitative understanding of outcomes of such sequential auctions. In earlier work (Paes Leme et al. 2012) we initiated the study of the price of anarchy in sequential ...

Auction Size and Price Dynamics in Sequential Auctions

This paper uses a unique data-set collected in a consistent way over a number of different auctions to investigate how empirical regularities in sequential auctions depend on the number of lots sold in those auctions. It is shown that prices tend to decline faster in auctions in which a small number of lots were sold. Starting prices tend to be higher in auctions with fewer lots, while average ...

The Spite Motive and Equilibrium Behavior in Auctions

We study auctions where bidders have independent private values but attach a disutility to the surplus of rivals, and derive symmetric equilibria for first-price, second-price, English, and Dutch auctions. We find that equilibrium bidding is more aggressive than standard predictions. Indeed, in second-price auctions it is optimal to bid above one’s valuation; that is, bidding “frenzies” can ari...

The Effects of Auction Parameters on Price Dispersion and Bidder Entry on eBay: A Conditional Logit Analysis

This paper studies price dispersion and bidder entry in sequential online auctions of indistinguishable items, where goods and shipping costs are identical. Contrary to intuition and the “law of one price,” previous empirical analyses show large price swings among auctions of identical products. To study this phenomenon, this paper performs empirical analysis on a dataset of 3,164 sequential eB...

The Non-existence of Equilibrium in Sequential Auctions When Bids Are Revealed

Sequential auctions of homogeneous objects are common in public and private marketplaces. Weber derived equilibrium results for what is now a classic model of sequential auctions. However, Weber’s results are derived in the context of two particular price quote assumptions. In this paper, we examine a model of sequential auctions based on online auctions, in which, after each auction, all bids ...
